The General Practice Airways Group (GPIAG) is an independent charity representing primary care health professionals interested in delivering the best standards of respiratory care. It is dedicated to achieving optimal respiratory care for all through:
• Representing primary care respiratory health needs at policy level
• Promoting best practice in primary care respiratory health through education, training and other services
• Supporting the development of primary care health professionals in respiratory medicine
• Facilitating and leading primary care respiratory research

The GPIAG is a membership organisation. The General Committee, comprised of 8 elected members and four co-opted members, is responsible for developing and coordinating the activities of the group and is accountable to the board of trustees. Membership is open to any healthcare professional working in primary care in the UK. Supporter membership is open to anyone else interested in primary care respiratory medicine.

Influencing Policy
With its growing reputation and influence the GPIAG has become increasingly involved with influencing respiratory policy both nationally and locally. It provides a national, independent, authoritative voice for all members of the primary care respiratory team. Working in conjunction with others, such as the British Thoracic Society and the British Lung Foundation, the GPIAG is striving hard to ensure respiratory medicine is given the priority it merits in national policy making and consequently as a local priority, for example through the national service framework for COPD and other mechanisms. Through our website and electronic alert scheme members can submit their views so that we can be sure we represent our members in key consultations such as the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QoF) of the GMS contract and National Institute of Clinical Excellence appraisals and guidance. The GPIAG is also a member of the International Primary Care Respiratory Group (IPCRG).

Promoting Best Practice - Publications, Meetings and Conferences
The GPIAG produces a regular world class journal: Primary Care Respiratory Journal (PCRJ), which is available free to members. The PCRJ is dedicated to publishing peer-reviewed original research as well as topical editorials, original reviews, short reports and patient case histories all appropriate to respiratory primary care. The journal, published by Sherborne Gibbs, is listed on PubMed, EMBASE (Excerpta Medica) and Scopus. The journal is available online at http://www.thepcrj.org.

The GPIAG holds a national primary care respiratory conference each year featuring key-note speeches and presentations on issues in respiratory clinical practice plus the latest research, workshops and lively debates. From time to time, the Charity also organises regional meetings and produces publications, including an opinion sheet series summarising key topics and other educational programmes to update you on topical, relevant issues in respiratory primary care. Members of the GPIAG are offered substantial discounts on registration fees for all GPIAG conferences and meetings. GPIAG publications are available free to members.

Supporting the development of primary care healthcare professionals
As a primary care health professional, the GPIAG provides you with regular updates on primary care respiratory issues and offers you a forum for sharing ideas, as well as the opportunity to collaborate in research and to promote involvement in respiratory care in the community. Many of our members are actively involved in the development of guidelines and protocols and sit on advisory panels concerned with the treatment of respiratory disease both nationally and locally.

The GPIAG has produced a series of programmes specifically designed to support the needs of nurses working in primary care respiratory medicine including a respiratory skills framework and a series of protocols for use in practice. A further series of patient group directives (PGDs), a respiratory network, resource packs are also in development for primary care nurses working in respiratory medicine.

The GPIAG plays a key role in supporting GPs and Practitioners with a Special Interest (G/PwSI) in respiratory medicine through the development of standards and by offering networking facilities and ongoing training and development opportunities. The GPIAG is also working to develop a broader group of respiratory champions able to influence and develop respiratory care in Primary Care Organisations across the UK and is committed to supporting individual members in this respect.

The GPIAG website includes regular features and updates on the activities of the group and includes a members-only section, allowing members to freely download GPIAG publications, and other educational programmes and to participate in specific discussion forums of their choice.

Facilitating and Leading Primary Care Respiratory Research
The GPIAG leads primary care respiratory research, raising the profile, facilitating collaboration and supporting pragmatic and 'real life' research through:

  • Identification of primary care research needs across the breadth of respiratory disease treated in primary care including asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis and other chronic lung conditions, respiratory infections (including influenza), allergy and rhinitis, smoking cessation
  • Planning, designing, reviewing and securing funding for pragmatic, 'real life' research of relevance to primary care in line with the needs identified
  • Facilitating research into the best means of organising respiratory care in primary care
  • Building the respiratory primary care research capability, for example through the continued development of the GPIAG research network and collaboration with other primary care research networks
The GPIAG also supports new and inexperienced researchers in primary care with training courses and guidance from our editorial board with the submission of original research to our journal, PCRJ.
